NOCHE de CULTURA - 2014
A TRIBUTE TO CESAR CHAVEZ
Once again, ASB students produced a wonderful show honoring the work of Cesar Chavez.  The Rotary Theater was this year's venue.  The evening  was enhanced by demonstrations of art from a variety of cultures that represent the best of the melting pot that is America.

After a brief introduction by principal Reyes, ASB students led the audience in the flag salute.  Buddy Jones' group opened the performances with an explanation of the African tradition where drums call people to an event.  He shared his remembrances of the strike by the United Farm Workers and the impact Cesar Chavez had on his life and the valley.  World class master drummer, Waddaba, gave out the call on his djembe to the accompaniment of the Buddy Jones drummers.
The evening continued with personal reflections from Sequoia students Desiree Cortez, Alexis Legoretta, and Sierra Acosta.  Performances by Mariachi Raices Mexicana, the Sequoia High School Choir, Redwood Asian Cultural Dancers, Little Creek Lodge Singers including a Native American dancer, Island Style Production dancers, Ballet Folklorico del Lago, and De Alegria delighted the audience.  The Pa Chango combo closed out the evening with their wonderful Latin Jazz stylings.  Their final contribution being an original composition that combined video and song encouraging people to care for each other and ending with a tribute to Cesar Chavez.

Following the performances, the entire SHS staff was honored for their work with students.  Retiring teachers Dee Dee King, Shirleen Jones, and Betsy Cross were recognized for the work they have done with flowers, a plaque, and a hand-crafted metal sculpture of a Sequoia tree.  School Board member, Lucia Vazquez, was also recognized for her continued service to the community.

Congratulations to ASB for another successful production.
